Reseda and My Home
I have lived and spent most of life In Reseda, California. The area code 91335 has a special place in my heart because it’s where my parents decided to settle down and form their family. I have lived in the same house since I was born and I’m happy to still be there.
The income level in Reseda is less than the median household income of California which is $75,277. The per capita income is $25,396 which is about three-quarters of the amount in the Los Angeles-Long Beach-Anaheim Metro area and California.
According to the Census Report, Reseda has the highest population of Latinos, about 30% is made up of White people, 13% of people in Reseda are Asians, and only 4% is Black. These statistics are exactly the type of people you would see on a daily basis. My block/street, Tunney Ave, has mostly Latino households and the rest are White people.
The 13% of Asians kind of surprised me, but then I remembered that people from Far East, Southeast Asia, or the Indian subcontinent are considered “Asian” in the census and it made more sense.
The foreign-born population is about 44%, which is more than 1.5 times the rate in California. The Census reporter showed that almost half of the people in Reseda are immigrants.
The highest foreign-born population is Latin Americans at 54% followed by Asia at 38%, Europe at 6%, and Africa at 1%.
Since the highest population of people in Reseda are Latinos, about 43% of adults speak Spanish at home. Which leads to almost half of the children from ages 5–17 in Reseda to also speak Spanish. It’s interesting to see how strong languages can be.
The other languages for adults recorded are Indo-European at 12%, Asian/Islander at 11%, and other at 3%. The remaining 30% percent is English.
Lastly the poverty in Reseda area is about 20% higher than the rate In California. According to the Public Policy Institute of California, Los Angeles County has the highest poverty rate in California at 22%. The poverty In Reseda shocked me a little but then I compared it to Beverly Hills which was only about 10% but had half as many people living in the area. Comparing these statistics helped me realize the difference in size and population.
